In Pakistan most of the electricity is hydro-generated power. There are many dams built for this purpose. Among them Tarbella Dam is on the top of the list. Tarbela Dam situated on the Indus River in Pakistan is the largest earth filled dam in the world and second largest by structural volume. In fact it is name after town Tarbela located in haripur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest of Islamabad, near Topi. The dam is 485 feet (148 m) high above the riverbed. The dam forms the Tarbela Reservoir, with a surface area of approximately 250-square-kilometre (97 sq mi). The reservoir, with a maximum depth of more than 450ft, can impound up to 11.62 million acre foot (MAF) of water at the maximum lake elevation of 1,550ft.The dam was completed in 1976 and it was designed to store water from the Indus River for irrigation, flood control, and the generation of hydroelectric power. The useful life of the dam and reservoir was estimated to be somewhere around fifty years, since the dam's completion in 1976, meaning that the reservoir would have been full of sediment by 2030. It means that it will have to be emptied before 2030.
